Achieving What You Set Out To Do in your Business!

One thing I’ve noticed a fair bit of late is the importance of being clear about what you are trying to achieve. Now on the face of it this is obvious but actually in reality it often is not the case.

When people start a business, quite often their reasons are mixed for doing so. elements often include leaving a job they dislike, wanting to be more independent, earn more money or more often than not, earn a living doing something in an area that really interests you.

Whilst all of these elements are good reasons for going it alone, for starting your own business, what happens if you achieve these goals faster than you thought you might, or as is more often the case, you start to realise the goals you set were set too low and the reality isn’t cutting the mustard?

The key here is a combination of flexibility and being open to widening the scope without losing sight of the original objectives.

My own goals were complex in many way but they boiled down to the following:

I wanted to work in something that I was genuinely interested in, which turned out to be the Martial Arts industry, I wanted to be around people I liked, but at the same time I had financial ambitions and ultimately wanted to be free of the more mundane work and to have time to do what I wanted, when I wanted. It took ten years but largely I got all of them.

Then for me came the difficult question of “Now what?”

The Anarchist Entrepreneur is part of this. Whilst I still need to maintain a level of involvement in my other businesses, I no longer need to baby sit them, we work on new projects which are deliberately fun and interesting but on the whole the businesses run without me. Now I want to help other people do what works for the and potentially be involved in new ideas, new directions.

Its a very human thing to want growth, change and development, its what attracted me in many ways to martial arts but the longer I’ve been in business the more interested I am in the overall self development benefits of the journey not the destination.
